Rent safely on PropHive
Most landlords are genuine, but scammers target renters. These eight habits protect your money.
-
1View before you pay
Never pay a deposit, rent or “holding fee” before you have been inside the property and met the person letting it.
-
2Check who owns it
Ask for proof of ownership or the agent’s Fidelity Fund Certificate. Registered agents can be checked with the PPRA.
-
3Read the lease
A genuine landlord gives you a written lease. Check the rent, deposit, notice period and what is included.
-
4Beware of rates that are too good
A much cheaper price than similar places nearby is the most common scam sign.
-
5Be wary of urgency
Pressure to pay today, or a landlord who is “overseas” and can only send keys, are red flags.
-
6Pay safely
Pay into a business or trust account, never cash or a personal e-wallet to someone you haven’t met. Keep proof of payment.
-
7Take someone along
Bring a friend to viewings and tell someone where you are going.
